Scripture Pages that Link to Here
Genesis 2:4-25
:Gen 2:25 They were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

:Their initial condition prior to their fall into sin - morally innocent.

:Without sin, they would have rejoiced in their differences without any thought of sin - both them and all generations that would have come.

:Now that sin has entered the world, the concept of nakedness has taken a different significance. Because sin has influences our thinking, we cannot view this concept the way they did.

Genesis 3:1-24
:Gen 3:7-8 - The eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. They sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. They heard the voice of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of Yahweh God among the trees of the garden.

:The effects of sin... Now they could not even look at each other the way they originally did (with only righteous and pure desires for the good of the other). Now the idea of being focused on the interests of self has been born - with all the horrible byproducts, such as self-gratification, and everything that goes contrary to "love for neighbor." Covering themselves could not undo the effects of sin - though it could restrain some of its practices.

Genesis 9:1-29
:Gen 9:21-23 - [Noah] ... got drunk. He was uncovered within his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it on both their shoulders, went in backwards, and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were backwards, and they didn't see their father's nakedness.

:An illustration of how extreme this focus on self and self-gratification can get: It's not that Ham merely "saw" his father naked, but that he "saw" him with delight. It was a reflection of Ham's moral depravity.

[Other passages will be included which focus on the spiritual realities that our external coverings (clothes) should teach us - things such as our need to be "clothed with righteousness."]

Exodus 20:22-26
:A comment about the need for NOT exposing (the priest's) nakedness during worship/sacrifice. (A look through the Old Testament reveals that sexual sin was often associated with idolatry.)
