What Is It?
"Case Law" refers to examples of judicial rulings, which set the precedent for future rulings (which will often occur in new types of situations). Such rulings are the means that God used to explain how the Moral Law was to be applied to life. These were given by God prior to the situations in which they would be used, and (unlike modern-day case law) are totally authoritative - not the mere opinions of humans. They explain - with binding authority - the various ways the Ten Commandments were to be interpreted and applied.

It is important to realize that these rulings do not encompass all the possible applications of the Law - that would be impossible to do. Rather, they provide principles that show how the commandments apply, and these principles provide the framework for interpreting how to apply the commands in new situations.

The Old Covenant (the Law given to Moses) contains many examples of case law. Many of these examples can be used by individuals in "everyday life" - such as examples of how to treat animals. But others are intended for use by civil authority (not individuals), in judging (and punishing) those who have violated the commands of God.
