Israel was weaker than the nations of Canaan; but God was destroying them because of their irreversible wickedness.
Deuteronomy 4:38; 7:1; 9:1-3; 11:22-25
|
- Deu 4:38 - [God brought you out of Egypt] to drive out nations from before you greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as at this day.
- Deu 7:1 - When Yahweh your God shall bring you into the land where you go to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before you, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than you; ...
- Deu 9:1-3 - Hear, Israel: you are to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourself, cities great and fortified up to the sky, a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know, and of whom you have heard say, Who can stand before the sons of Anak? Know therefore this day, that Yahweh your God is he who goes over before you as a devouring fire; he will destroy them, and he will bring them down before you: so you shall drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as Yahweh has spoken to you.
- Deu 11:22-25 - For if you shall diligently keep all this commandment which I command you, to do it, to love Yahweh your God, to walk in all his ways, and to cleave to him; then will Yahweh drive out all these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves. Every place whereon the sole of your foot shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness, and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even to the hinder sea shall be your border. No man shall be able to stand before you: Yahweh your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you on all the land that you shall tread on, as he has spoken to you.

It was because of God's promises to their ancestors, and because of how wicked those nations were.
Deuteronomy 4:37; 7:7-8; 9:4-5
|
- Deu 4:37 - Because he loved your fathers [ancestors], therefore he chose their seed after them, and brought you out with his presence, with his great power, out of Egypt; [to drive out the nations...]
- Deu 7:7-8 - Yahweh didn't set his love on you, nor choose you, because you were more in number than any people; for you were the fewest of all peoples: but because Yahweh loves you, and because he would keep the oath which he swore to your fathers, has Yahweh brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.
- Deu 9:4-5 - Don't say in your heart, after Yahweh your God has thrust them out from before you, saying, For my righteousness Yahweh has brought me in to possess this land; whereas for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh does drive them out from before you. Not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart, do you go in to possess their land; but for the wickedness of these nations Yahweh your God does drive them out from before you, and that he may establish the word which Yahweh swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

It was not because of Israel being righteous, because they weren't!
Deuteronomy 9:6-8, 22-24
|
- Deu 9:6-8 - Know therefore, that Yahweh your God doesn't give you this good land to possess it for your righteousness; for you are a stiff-necked people. Remember, don't forget, how you provoked Yahweh your God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that you went forth out of the land of Egypt, until you came to this place, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. Also in Horeb you provoked Yahweh to wrath, and Yahweh was angry with you to destroy you.
- Deu 9:22-24 - At Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth Hattaavah, you provoked Yahweh to wrath. When Yahweh sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God, and you didn't believe him, nor listen to his voice. You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day that I knew you.

And if they failed to destroy those nations, their influence would destroy Israel.
Deuteronomy 7:2-5
|
- Deu 7:2-5 - ... and when Yahweh your God shall deliver them up before you, and you shall strike them; then you shall utterly destroy them: you shall make no covenant with them, nor show mercy to them; neither shall you make marriages with them; your daughter you shall not give to his son, nor shall you take his daughter for your son. For he will turn away your son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so the anger of Yahweh would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly. But you shall deal with them like this: you shall break down their altars, and dash their pillars in pieces, and cut down their Asherim, and burn their engraved images with fire.

Additional concepts to consider:
- God owns the earth, not people. He can give it (like giving to a "tenant") to whoever he wants.
- God gives land to people for the purpose of using in a God-honoring way.
- When a people's wickedness becomes so great that repentance is impossible, God has the right to remove them from the land and give it to someone else.
Scripture Pages that Link to Here
Deuteronomy 2 & 3 (selected)
- God promises to give the nations over to Israel. Then three examples follow, in which he did that.
Deuteronomy 7:1-26
- Israel is weak but God is strong. Destroy them because of their extreme wickedness (it will be God destroying them). If you don't, their influence will destroy you. God gives you the land because of promises he made with Abraham (etc.).
- How will they do it? They need to trust God and he will deal with the wicked nations, the same way he did with Egypt.
Deuteronomy 9:1-29
- The Canaanites are too powerful for Israel. God will give Israel the land, because of the Canaanites' wickedness.
Psalm 44:1-3
- God did it, not Israel!
- Psa 44:2-3 - You drove out the nations with your hand, but you planted them. You afflicted the peoples, but you spread them abroad. For they didn't get the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their own arm save them; but your right hand, and your arm, and the light of your face, because you were favorable to them.
