Compare this with God's definition of marriage, Genesis 2:24.
| Genesis 2:24
 |
- Genesis 2:24 - Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh.

Jesus affirms that it was God who said this:

- Matthew 19:4-6 He [Jesus] answered, "Haven't you read that he [God] who made them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, 'For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall join to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh?' So that they are no more two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, don't let man tear apart."

- (Both parts of the sentence refer back to the word "he," referring to God: God "made" and God "said.")
