Beginning with events during the life of King Solomon (as king), and ending at the death of Judah's King Jehoshaphat (with a few comments about the Northern Kingdom's King Ahaziah).
Relationship to other Old Testament historical books
- Originally, 1 and 2 Samuel were combined as one book, and 1 and 2 Kings were combined as one book. This collection of books provides an account of the history of Israel, from the time of the prophet Samuel, to the exile in Babylon.
- 1 and 2 Chronicles provides a separate, shorter account of this history, with a somewhat different emphasis.
- The events described in 1 Kings parallels the events described in the first 20 chapters of 2 Chronicles (and the first few verses in chapter 21).
