(Though the concept of "king" began as a rebellion against God, God ultimately turned it around and used it to accomplish good. Jesus Christ is the "King of Kings.")

- The people wanted a king "like the other nations." They wanted a king to lead them, instead of God. This was an act of wickedness, for which God punished them (with the destruction of their wheat crop).
- Even so, if they would not turn away to false gods, he would not forsake them, for his own sake.
